Our Background

At Rolf Ockert. Architect we are driven by the pursuit of individual, finely tuned solutions—design responses shaped by curiosity, rigour, and a genuine desire to elevate the way people live and work. Every project is an opportunity to think deeply, to question assumptions, and to craft an outcome that is both optimised and unmistakably personal.

Rolf’s experience spans Europe, Asia, and Australia, enriched by extensive travel and exposure to a wide spectrum of architectural cultures. This breadth of influence forms what we like to think of as the mosaic of life: countless fragments of visual, practical, and cultural experience that come together to inform each design decision. It is still fascinating to us that identical design challenges can yield entirely different architectural outcomes — each one a reflection of the designer’s history, sensibilities, and accumulated knowledge.

Since its establishment in 2004, Rolf Ockert. Architect. has developed a diverse and award‑winning portfolio. Our work ranges from high‑end residential projects to commercial and retail environments, product and furniture design, and masterplanning. Projects have been completed across Australia and internationally, including recent work in New Zealand, Japan, the United States, and Switzerland. Many of these have been published widely in books and magazines around the world.

Rolf’s practical foundation was shaped through extended periods in renowned architectural practices in Germany, England, and Japan, including time with Frei Otto, Michael Hopkins, James Stirling, and Riken Yamamoto. These experiences instilled a deep respect for craft, structure, and the discipline of thoughtful design.

From 1997 to 2004, Rolf served as Associate Director at a boutique Sydney practice, contributing to a series of significant public and residential projects. These included the Andrew “Boy” Charlton Pool in the Domain (RAIA Award 2003), the King George V Recreation Centre in The Rocks (RAIA Award 1999), the Butterfly House in Dover Heights, and the MLC Aquatic Centre (RAIA Award 2004). This period cemented his extensive local expertise across all stages of design, documentation, and construction.

Rolf is a member of the Australian Institute of Architects and is registered with the Boards of Architects in both New South Wales and Victoria.
